DETROIT CITY CHARTER

Vote on Proposal R: General Revision of the 2012 Detroit City Charter on August 7th.

This ballot initiative is important to the Detroit Environmental Agenda because the Detroit City Charter is the city’s governing framework and contains important guidelines for how City departments should adopt sustainable practices.

This question on your ballot will say: “Do you favor a general revision of the 2012 Detroit City Charter by a Charter Revision Commission?

This ballot initiative asks voters if they want to initiate the process to make changes to the Detroit City Charter, a document that details the powers of local government and divides responsibilities between the City Council and the Mayor and his / her Departments. The Charter also sets many of the rules associated with our local government.

Voting yes means that candidates for a Charter Revision Commission will appear on the November 2018 General Election ballot. If Proposal R passes, 9 charter commissioners will be elected out of 15 candidates appearing on the November ballot.

• Charter Commissioners will be able to propose changes to the Detroit City Charter that could add, remove, strengthen, or weaken provisions related to the environment, public health, and good governance.
• Once the final revised Charter is drafted by the Charter Commission, it will be submitted to the Governor and Attorney General for legal review and then Detroiters will vote on whether or not to approve the changes.

Voting no means that the current Detroit City Charter adopted in 2012 will remain in effect as the governing framework document for the city.
