Zoning Code Sustainability Ideas
The City of Madison went through a public process to rewrite their zoning code a few years ago. This particular document takes the sustainability ideas submitted in public engagement and categorizes them by which ideas can be addressed through the zoning code VS those that must be addressed by something other than the zoning code. The document also includes 24 broad strategies to apply to the rewrite of the zoning code.
For example, the zoning code rewrite could remove obstacles to renewable energy systems and allow for solar orientation for building placement and street design. However, the zoning code couldn’t provide incentives (other than density bonuses) for construction that meets green building standards.
